EFFECT OF FERMENTED MILK ON LACTOBACILLI IN ORAL CAVITY

Abstract
This experiment was performed to study the effect of fermented milk intake on lactobacilli in saliva, dental plaque, and carious dentin.
The elementary schoolboys were divided into two groups, caries-free and caries-susceptible group. Salivary clearance time was measured with 10% glucose solution and whole saliva dental plaque and carious dentin were collected from molar region after and before drinking the fermented milk.
Lactobacilli in each sample were cultured with tomato juice agar media at 37¡ÆC for 72 hours under aerobic condition and counted with stereoscopic microscope.
The salivary clearance time was 6-10 minutes and total lactobacilli of whole saliva dental plaque and carious dentin in caries-free group were less than those of caries susceptible group and lactobacilli counts of dental plaque were more than those of whole saliva before drinking the fermented milk. After drinking the fermented milk lactobacilli of whole saliva, dental plaque and caries dentin were increased in two experimental groups. In caries susceptible group, more lactobacilli were detected.
